Are translation memories GDPR-compliant?

Yes – provided that the translation platform used complies with GDPR requirements.

It is not the translation memory itself that is decisive, but how and where the translation data it contains is stored, processed and protected. Companies should therefore ensure a data protection-compliant infrastructure and transparent data processing.

Important criteria include:

  • GDPR-compliant server infrastructure: Storage and processing of translation data in compliance with applicable data protection requirements – ideally within the EU.
  • Responsible handling of company data: Translation data must not be used for training external AI models or other purposes without consent.
  • Secure role and permission concept: Only authorised persons have access to confidential company and translation data.
